Writing style for company blog
Blogs seems to have become a critical aspect for online companies - they help whip up a loyal userbase by providing a personality and human face(s) for the company.
I've always been a bit anal-retentive about things like spelling, grammar, capitalization, etc, lots of adjectives and flourishes. But after reading posts like http://blog.box.net/?p=737 vs http://status.aws.amazon.com/s3-20080720.html, I realize that blogs written in a sanitary, "professional" manner seem to be lacking any of the personality a blog usually has.
How do you write your blog posts? Do you check it carefully for spelling/grammar, do you make sure not to put in too much info, or do you throw caution to the wind and just use your blog as a stream-of-consciousness with minimal filtering?
Thanks!
Firstly, you can find my blog at www.shirlawsonline.com/blogs
I have a journalism background, so spelling, grammar etc come naturally to me. The personality element is key - even my weekly Links blog (which is also sent out on email) have some personality that is clearly me. These are identified as Jacob, so there's no assumption that my opinion perfectly matches that of every coach in our global business.
I do proof read every blog at least 3 times. That's more editing for tone and message than grammar, but does indicate a level of thoroughness which I believe helps the final product. For smaller businesses, that thoroughness may be a block to action, so where the action of writing a blog has value then the thoroughness may not be so positive.
Even if proofreading three times slows down the product, it almost certainly boosts the presentation value. Likely there's a balance in the middle we should be aiming for - I'll shoot for reading things over twice next time.
